Coarctation of the aorta is an abnormal narrowing of the aorta. The aorta is the large blood vessel that exits the heart and supplies the body with oxygen-rich blood. Coarctation of the aorta can also lead to very high blood pressure. Over time, this can harm the heart leading to heart failure. Death can be the result of heart failure, aortic rupture, aortic dissection, endocarditis, brain hemorrhage, or heart attack.
