A level-2 ultrasound scan refers to a special type of scan to assess the fetus for structural abnormalities.  It is usually carried out between 18-22 weeks of pregnancy in order to detect fetal abnormalities that may compromise the quality of life, and gives the parents options for treatment or termination of the pregnancy.

Don’t expect that every problem in the fetus is being detected. The ability to detect an abnormality in the fetus at an ultrasound exam depends on a number of factors, such as the size and position of the fetus, the amount of amniotic fluid around the fetus, the body habitus of the mother (whether she is overweight or slim), the type of equipment used, and, most importantly, the skill and experience of the person performing the sonogram.
