A  lobectomy is a surgery to remove one of the lobes of the lungs. The lungs have sections called lobes. It is most often done during a surgery called a thoracotomy.

During this type of surgery, the chest is opened. 

Health conditions of the chest and lungs that may be treated with lobectomy include: 

  • Tuberculosis.  
  • Lung abscess.    
  • Emphysema. This is a chronic illness caused by the breakdown of the elastic fibers in the lungs.
